Because couples have learned to ignore each other to the point that essential communication may be lost in transit.
Example A)

Kirsty: Im going up the road, does anyone want anything?
Everyone except Glenn: No thanks/Had lunch/Going myself etc.
Kirsty: IM GOING UP THE ROAD- WHO WANTS LUNCH!?
Glenn: Yeah I'm hungry, get me something.
5 minutes later.
Phone: Ring Ring... Ring Ring...
Glenn: Where's Kirsty?!?
