Hmmm, they have been taking lessons from the British. Remember the Rover? Apparently it was not necessary to construct a flange that the fan belt travelled over of anything more than slightly beefed-up aluminium foil. Of course, when it (inevitably) failed, the whole thing ground to a halt, because it was some how intimately connected with every other pump process in the engine.
And the Rover mechanics? What did they have to say? "Yeh, this happens all the time". Bear in mind, when we bought ours they had been in production for at least 5 years.
