I'm a text message addict, I'm afraid. So my phone's on silent/vibrate mode and in my pocket all the time, and I check incoming messages discreetely and when *I* feel like it. I tend not to answer voice calls unless I have nothing better to do...

It also helps to have an itty-bitty phone. Makes my hands look bigger ;-)
