In New Zealand, if you've been in a 'relationship similar to marriage' for 3 years (sharing accomodation, bills, investments and liabilities) you're deemed to have the same rights as a married couple. It used to be slightly unfair, as a gay couple ahd to wait 3 years to ahve the same rights, whereas a straight couple could rock up to their church and have those rights in 10 minutes.
