Car troubles
Oct. 12th, 2005 10:51 amIts support gone, the car swayed backwards, toppling the axle stands and sending it on a hefty lunge towards the precipice. I leapt backwards and watched aghast as a ton of japanese steel lurched towards the neighbour's car below- teetered, and stopped, swaying ominously, its lost battle with gravity stayed by a lone concrete block.
This is why I dont get up early in the morning, I prefer my nightmares to happen while I'm asleep.
Being 7am and before my first coffee of the day, my responses were suitably stunted- after an age of gaping in stunned horror, I leapt into action, reversing my car down the driveway and using a towrope to tether the stricken vehicle. My car struggled to drag the beached carcass back onto the driveway, but the creaks and crunches coming from the cloud of tyresmoke behind were encouraging. For one heart-stopping moment I felt my tug being pulled backwards, but a quick stab at the brakes had me inching forwards again.
When the smoke cleared I could see that things had improved slightly- the car was at least paralell on the drive, although it was still rocking towards the edge. Professional help would be needed. I shored it up with trolley jacks, wheels, and as much wood as I could find, but I will need a salvage truck to come drag it to safety. With the car as stable as its going to get, I think I'll leave that nightmare for tonight.
