It was then, as the punters started to arrive, that I noticed the disastrous flaw.
"The mirror balls! They're not moving!"
"What? AAaaaaaahhhhh!!! Nooooo!!!"
A frenzy of activity ensued as we scrambled to find the fault. Was something unplugged? switched off? fuse blown? I could sense the unease building in the air, as the confused and disoriented patrons questioned their sanity. "it looks like a gay bar, but there's no mirrorballs? Are we in the right place?"
I'll admit, I started to panic. Loren cranked up the smoke machine in an effort to disguise the lack of happy rainbow light beams, but the smoke hung in the air, flat and grey. I could feel heterosexuality oozing in around the edges of the room, cold fishy tendrils of suburban mediocrity stealing our will to dance.
And then Loren, who was trying to hide behind the amp stack, uttered a muffled "Aha!" and with that, the mirrorballs sprang to life. A multihued burst of light awakened the smoke and set it to dancing, while the beams banished the creeping darkenss and invited all to come play on the dancefloor.
