Dirty filthy homo
Apr. 10th, 2008 01:31 pmUgh. Nissan Primera steering rack boot. Simple job, but how do people let their cars get that dirty?!? Ugh. Now I'm all covered in grease and dirt and have to go have a shower. After I've attended to something that's suddenly sprung up, of course.

I'm rather proud of my clever method for detaching steering knuckles from the steering arm- they're held in with a taper, and need a decent bash to release. Well it occurred to me that hitting the end of the taper is actually applying impulse in the same axis as the stiction, and is therefore the least efficient way of breaking the taper. So now I just use a pry bar between the knuckle and steering arm, apply a moderate force, and tap the end of the steering arm with a hammer. One or two mild taps is all thats needed- since the shock comes perpendicular to the axis of stiction it dislodges the taper much easier.
And if anyone actually read that I'll be shocked. I should really have put the picture at the end. But I'm a commentwhore, so that was never going to happen.
