(no subject)
May. 4th, 2009 05:33 pmClearly I am blind.
I put the car up on stands and crawled underneath to remove the alternator belt, and finally, after a month of periodically peering into the engine bay looking for the source of the noise, noticed that the drive belt had jumped a groove on the crank pulley. The noise was the outermost groove running on the pulley flange, which is slightly larger diameter than the V-grooves.
Popped it back in to place, re-tensioned the belt, and all is perfect again.
I suspect I know where it happened- the first time I noticed the engine making a noise was after I merged onto the Hamilton expressway, a maneuver that involves holding second gear up to the 7750rpm limiter. At least, it does when *I* do it. I suspect the belt was a fraction too loose and just jumped off a bit.
I'm stoked that I just saved myself a $300 alternator rebuild.
