exploitation and gore

Chris and I went to see Linklater's film "Fast Food Nation" last night. Great concept, good portrayal of the issues, a fantastic rendition of the hopelessness most people experience when faced with the fact that their lives are thoroughly run by big business. Shame about the movie, though.
The cameos were unnecessary name-dropping wank. Ooh look! It's Bruce Willis as an important character. He's on screen for 5 minutes, and we never see him again. What's wrong Mr Linklater? Couldnt afford Bruce for longer? Gimmicky. Very gimmicky. (so that will be a classic Linklater film then)
The killing floor scene at the end was impressively gorey- cows being rendered, bled, disembowelled. I was very glad we'd not had time to go to Burger King before the meal, though Chris missed most of it as he passed out in the chair.
And again at the top of the escalator as we left.
And again, alarmingly, halfway down the escalator. I ahd to catch him and lift him over the evil toe-shredding thingy at the end of the escalator, prop him up against a wall and check his pulse. Not good. It seems our Chris doesnt like the sight of blood- and the killing floor scene had a LOT of blood.
So there you go: good film spoiled by slow spots and unneccesary celebrity cameo wanking, but fun if you have squeamish friends to take along.
