Except in the case of *this* unconventional and very open relationship I'd say "if you love something, encourage it to be free.."
We know we will always come home for the things we cant get as individuals, so we encourage each other to go and explore on our own.
I think its an issue of trust: if you never set someone free, you're always worried they will run away. If you set them free all the time and they keep coming back, you never have that worry.
