In between errands today I went motorbike shopping. Mmmm bikes... I think when I've finished paying off my laptop I'll treat myself to a Honda CB250 Hornet.

Reviews claim it's sporty and handles well, but is upright enough that you dont get a bad back on longer journeys. I like the way it looks with its fat rear tyre, supposedly the same size as on the larger CB600.

And apart from that its been a productive day. I finished the front suspension on the new Piazza, now just to do the rear and look at the bodywork...

And on a CB250, will he be fast enough to get away? <grin> Seriously, I try to be open-minded about Japanese motorcycles - some of my best friends ride Rice Burners.

Heck, I learned to ride on a CB250. Here in the States, Honda cuts a special deal with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation to give them small displacement Honda motorcycles cheap or free, so most Americans learn to ride on Hondas.

I weigh 73kg. Actually, hang on..
*weighs self*
70kg, post botty-problem. A 250 is plenty fast enough for me... :-)

And who makes a 250 that isnt japanese? apart from those clever italians. Hmm now theres a thought, a nice Aprilia or Ducati...

When I was looking for my first bike I found that Kawaski zzr2560 was the best by far. Kawasaki have a better reputation for warranty where as honda did not. Also check with insurance companies as Honda can be more expensive. I like both as you know I ride a honda as well. But the zzr was still my pick. Do some research on both.

Swoopy, integrated styling, nice, flat bars, tucked undertail mufflers, and is that a radiator?
Honda finally retired their ancient, bulletproof air-cooled CB250 engine?
Sweet!

Indeed that is a radiator, though a CB250 hornet is different to a standard CB250. I believe the hornet uses the engine out of a CBR250. 4 cylinders too!

The other option is a Hyosung Comet, which is Korean and is supposedly well-built.

The only problem is how it looks: most forums are full of guys caliming it looks as good as a Hornet, anda new one cost as much as a 2nd-hand hornet, but I jsut dont see it. The detailing is clumsy, the exposed frame should never have been exposed, and the tail is all wrong. Plus its got a couple of cylinders missing... for a small bike, of course. Wouldnt want to disparage V-twins in present company ;-)

My first bike was a Suzuki GT250, which I bought new. Anyway, it blew up while I was chasing this bomby old Triumph sports car up the kaimai's and I had to limp all the way home on one piston. Anyway I come into town and it was back firing and making this loud bang sound like a shot gun going off, every time the lone piston fired.. I was so embarrassed. I had to go past this wedding party and I knew everyone there. Next few days everyone was saying..."was that you I saw at the weekend and your bike was having a few problems"... "no... wasnt me, it must have been my cousin"...
Anyway........I sold that a few weeks later, bought a new Police edition, Honda CB750... then the CB900 Bol'd'or.... and then.... came to my senses and bought American and thats the way it has been for the last 15 years....

Someday when I'm allowed to ride something bigger than a 250 (legally ;-)) I'll get me a harley of some sort. But until then I might as well get me a nice reliable 250 that isnt too embarassing, as I'll be paying for it for a while...

I've always wanted a police-spec CB750, they are like hens teeth now...

The raised exhaust looks keen, but means melty saddlebags (or finding hard bags for it). Then again, dunno that you'll be doing any epic tours on a 250.

Can't say that I know much about 250s (other than the Aprilia that the kid down the street has, which sounds like a handful of bumblebees in a tin can and would be great fun for someone half my size), as here we just let new bikers ride any ridiculous thing they want. Makes for some truly amusing (and frightening) viewing at dealers.

If I had to take luggage I'd fit a packrack and/or tank-top bag, but for most things a small backpack is enough.

I kinda like 250s, the sporty ones are highly-tuned and give 400's a run for their money, plus theyre lighter and more chuckable. I appreciate handling over speed and power, though the Hornet still has a top speed of 110mph...

From: [identity profile] boofbiker.livejournal.com
at 110 mph you want a heavier bike to have better stability, 250 just dont have it. they are easy to throw around though but they are easy to be thrown around in the wind as well. But you have to start somewhere and if you are a real biker you will love it anyway
