Damn exchange rate... the $US is rising against the $NZ again, grrr... I just ordered US$550 and it cost me NZ$800. Ouch!!!

Remind me to use my Visa card as much as possible... Actually thats a thought, is it best to use cash or credit cards for everyday purchases in the US?

I try to use my Visa as much as possible. But don't forget most CC companies now add a % handling fee on foreign transactions, which can hurt a little bit. Their exchange rates do happen to be pretty good though, so I think it all comes out in the wash. CC's are so much easier than dealing with foreigh currancy.

ACK!!!

When traveling abroad NEVER buy money before you leave - its way more expensive (rip off actually!) and it will bite you in the ass when it comes to fluctuation. Use your card (ATM, Debit, or Credit) - each transaction will fluctuate as the exchange rate does. If you *must* exchange cash, do it at your destination. XO - Erich

This indeed was true until recently, but now some US visa and MC franchises are taking a percentage foreign transaction fee. And it's not cheap. A total rip-off, but banks get everything they want from Washington.

The problem is that with the upcoming election in NZ, the exchange rate is falling and will continue to do so up until the elction, which is at the end of my stay in the US. Best to exchange *now* and avoid the upcoming crap exchange rates...

Make sure you ask your Visa issuer about foreign transaction costs. Lucky for you NZ consumer law is pro-consumer. Not so here. You're probably protected, but no harm asking.

Don't worry--if you run out, we'll put a price of admission on your pants.

I think the crepe stand near the Lone Star only takes cash when you're buying at 3am.

Mmmm, crepes.

I exchanged some money today and I got 742.00 USD from 1000.00 AUD but I still have money left in my accounts. I just wanted to make sure I got it while the Aussie dollar was ok.

G, Do the cash thing if you can. Visa with a stink exchange rate, plus NZ's currency conversion fee, plus evil 20% interest rates if you dont pay it all off at the end of the month, makes the credit card option far less attractive then the good old Greenback in your hand.. musclebearnz..
