I think the reality is sinking in for both Erich and myself: it's really happening, and though its never too late to call it off, its almost impossible to do so now. I get to support my bear here on my own turf where I'm strongest and most resourceful, he gets a fresh start, a calm break, to experience life in a friendlier, warmer country. We both get to know someone we really want to know better and to start devising a future.

And it's currently scaring the pants off us. Yeehah!! All those what-ifs, the good ones and bad ones, now we get to actually find out- what if?

If our experience is anything to go by, don't panic if things don't go swimmingly in the first month or so. There's a tremendous amount of accelerated adjusting to get through and prospective permanence has a very different flavour to short passionate interludes. No matter how well-travelled Erich may be, he's going to be experiencing a degree of culture-shock, and that typically lasts 3-6 months. Is he going to be able to work in NZ?

BTW, we're likely to be visiting Auckland in December :-)
