Up at 0630 and cleaning and tidying my room. It felt great at the time but it's made my long busy friday even longer. I need something to do with my mornings- I've scheduled every second day for getting my video projects up and running, and I'm thinking that in the inbetween days I might gotothegym.

What? I said I think I might gotothegym.

Fine. I'm thinking of joining a gym. Or maybe just paying per visit. I dunno, how does the gym thing work? Guess I'll find out. Actually, I suspect I'll go into one, ask stupid questions, get embarassed and frustrated, and end up fleeing. I guess that means I should go enquire at a gym I have no intention of joining, leave the one across the road for last.

Funny, I'm in the same boat. Thinkin about a gym, askin "stubit" questions, gettin embarassed about how little I know...Of course I'm a scrawny, partially grey, and old ta some.
Yer a "slightly paunchy" hunky bear... one look at ya and they won't care what questions ya ask, they'll just want ta give ya a .... workout... ;)

I'm sure to most of the tanned, toned and shaved gym bunnies I'm just a short fat troll with poor standards of personal grooming. Which doesnt bother me in the slightest- I'm rather partial to short fat hairy men :-)

Considering what I went through in PE classes as a child, I'll never EVER set foot in a gym as a customer. Call that irrational if you like, but it will simply never happen.

That said, I do need to excavate my exercise machine and use it every morning; I have a sedentary job and I simply need to exercise regularly. It's just a matter of finding the motivation, aside from knowing intellectually that I need to, that exercise is one of those things that's good for you pretty much no matter what's wrong with you, etc.

OK, speaking as someone who has had a love/hate relationship with gyms, here's what I've learned:

* Figure out why you are doing it. Do you want muscles? Do you want to be toned? A stronger heart? Lose weight? Once you do know, you'll be able to make your way a lot easier.

* Read a little bit about it to get an idea of what to do. The 'For Dummies' series helped me a lot because I didn't really know what to do or how to do the exercises and most of the information I found was written by 'exercise gurus' that really just wanted to plug in their services and products.

Really. It's a lot easier for that.

Personally, whatever goal you choose...I think you are quite amazing as you are. :-)

Awww shucks... *blushes*

Basically I just want to gain mass around arms, shoulders, chest and legs- enough to match my new belly. I'm not particularly interested in cardio, losing weight or getting toned. Shouldnt be too difficult...

Echoing someone else, be clear on what your objectives are. If you want to get fitter/healthier and cosmetics aren't such a priority then there are lots of alternatives to the gym: dancing, skating, martial arts, yoga, cycling...

If you choose an activity that's social and fun, you're much more likely to stick at it. Personally I find traditional gyms really tedious and prefer activities that offer some other benefits besides just exercise.
