"You wouldn't steal a car..."

No, but genuine cars don't make me sit there with the alarm blaring for 5 minutes before it lets me use any controls. Nor does it attempt to stop me from buying insurance in case my car gets damaged or stolen.

If a car did that, you can bet your ass I'd want a copied one rather than a genuine one.

"You wouldn't steal a handbag..."

Of course not. Unless it was *really* pretty. But that's another story. As far as I know, handbags don't lock you out for 5 minutes while lecturing you on how bad it is to steal handbags every time you want to get to your purse or cellphone.

If a handbag did that, I'd sure as hell want a copied one.

Hell, if genuine handbags were as disappointing and expensive as, say, hollywood movies, I'd definitely look for a ripoff handbag first.

Poor Hollywood. They really don't get the concept that they have to outcompete the pirates with quality and features, and that making cheaper movies and locking them away behind antipiracy nag screens is the exact *opposite* of what people will pay for.

And I wouldn't read a book where every time I opened it the first three chapters required me to be thoroughly admonished, so why the fuck do I have to put up with it on a purchase I own?

Thus why I like making backups of my DVDs - I can remove the PUOs and skip the crap.

No I wouldn't steal a car, or a handbag. Both of them are owned by individuals, and the theft would cause them great distress.

A movie is owned by a huge, faceless corporation. There would be no emotional distress suffered by it. I would happily steal a movie.

OMG!

And I ONLY just watched the Season 2 Episode 3 "German Cannibal" episode of "The IT Crowd" where they play a 'fake' FBI anti-piracy warning! It's HYSTERICAL! Have you seen it?

Sadly, all the embedding has been disabled, so it's link only.... :-(
