Glen just asked 'who wants to work Friday and Monday?' (Friday and monday being public holidays and all)

I had to answer "well, I cant work friday because I'm going to a party, but I can work monday"

Glenn didnt seem impresed with that response.

I wonder if my application for leave on the friday before Anzac day is in jeopardy now?

:-)

Note: I'm on a salary. No extra money for working extra hours, though Glen did say we'd get a day in lieu. Given that taking time off is a stressful, guilt-inducing process as it is, I'd rather not complicate things with days in lieu.)

Here's a tactic. In the future don't say "I'm going to a party." Say that you have a commitment. You do, you accepted an invitation. Leave it at that.

LOL Ive worked with Glen long enough to know that he would jsut have asked "Oh, what sort of committment?". Its easier to be honest with him.

Like the time I said "I'm just going out for a few minutes" and he said "where are you going" so I replied "I have to get this stool sample to the lab before it gets cold"

If he doesnt like the answer he shouldnt ask the question..

As if he should be surprised that less than a week from a four-day national holiday weekend, people might have already made freakin' PLANS!

Taking time off from work that one is entitled to should not be stressful or "guilt inducing." You've earned the time off, and with reasonable notice it should be granted. Likewise if Glenn needs people to work over a holiday, he should bring that up well in advance - at least a couple months. It's not like no one knows when the national holidays are until less than a week out.

The nature of advertising is short deadlines, this one's shorter than usual as the company wants us to pitch for the job- so theyre being wankers about it and seeing who will work over easter. My response is that if theyre that nasty to work for I dont care how good teh job is, but its not my company so I dont have a lot of say.

I REALLY need you to come over here, stand over Glen (looking as scarey as you can) and explain that to him. I'm sure the guys here would pitch in to pay for your flights...

I suppose that does make a difference, but still - when going into this, he knew the holiday weekend was coming and if it didn't occur to him that people might have made plans... he's being silly. That's what people DO on holidays. I understand wanting to bring in business - but driving the staff insane isn't worth it.

What can I say - I'm a process geek.

I'd be happy to thunder at him - as well as pointing out that when a short-deadline issue comes up, his practise of making the process of getting time off so annoying that people don't want to accumulate time off in lieu because of the drama involved in actually using it later impedes his ability to get people to work under such circumstances.
