Holy Crap that's expensive.

I woulda thought Alaska at xmas would be cheap. I mean, who goes there in winter?

Do you need to borrow any mittens? :-)

Oh puh-lease, that's like US$39.95 (ok, so its US$2200) Still not bad considering its almost twice as far as AKL-LAX...

I'm knitting, and growing a beard, as we speak.

Get a navy P-coat. Dark blue wool down to mid-thighs. Wonderfully warm, even at -30F.

And mittens are better than gloves at that sort of temperature. "Chopper" mittens in leather are trés butch.

And thermal underwear (aka longjohns) allow you to stand around in regular jeans whilst giving the impression that the cold doesn't bother you. Very manly.

It's an entirely new category of drag to add to your wardrobe!

Beards, strangely, don't seem to help much with the cold. I've heard it speculated that they are actually better for wicking sweat in hot climates. Note that eskimos don't have beards.

Delmar is a trip. He's hilarious to hang out with... at first meeting he'll always ask you if you have a little eskimo in you. When you say "no" he'll ask you if you'd like one to be. DOH! hahaha

Thanks for the link to this site Furr... and most Eskimos do not have Facial hair as extensive as mine... My mother is Full blooded Inupiaq Eskimo, and my father is, Well, Half Orangutan mutt from Missouri. German - Irish - Choctaw - and a few other indian tribes from the south... we both have the same beard, its actually kinda cute... feel free to email me at PolarbearDN@yahoo.com guys. I will be in Anchorage this weekend... hunting down a new cave for the long winter nights to cum...

I was wonderin' where that frisky Eskimo had disappeared to as of late. Another winter on the Slope.... now THAT place is COLD. Makes Anchorage look like Florida. LOL

Uh, ok. Yea, it's hard to make blanket generalizations without getting slapped for it.

Delmar certainly has a nice beard.

But aren't beards *generally* less common on eskimos?

Still I guess the argument that they're not an evolutionary advantage in the cold could be shot down with assertions like the eskimos are descended from pacific islanders or others who don't have beards, and it simply hasn't been long enough for beards to evolve.

Wool? Try bear-hair, my love. If I appear to have my paws attached to my face, its just the bear-fur mittens I've knitted out of my beard...

Well actually witht he Aurora we do get a fair share of tourists up here in the winter - mostly Japanese - who have rated experiencing the Aurora second only to seeing the pyramids in Giza as something they must do before they die. The added expense is actually the leg into New Zealand which is peak season (ridiculous I know). He got a great deal considering I was looking at spending 2800-3500 USD! OUCH

Hmm.. I notice two fairly lengthy layovers at LAX. I'll be on my own way to Oregon to see my father on the 23rd, but I'll be back down here well before your layover on the 6th. I'd be happy to come to the airport to meet you.

Bring a spare helmet and we could do a short tour around LA- that is, presuming you practise riding with a pillion first!! :-)

That's not very likely to happen, I'm afraid... the idea of being responsible for someone else on the bike scares the dickens out of me. I'm not even sure who I'd practice with - most motorcycle riders I know will only go pillion in event of emergency. And it would help to have someone who's GOOD at buddy-riding....

I DO know a really nifty spot for viewing the "HOLLYWOOD" sign with minimal visual clutter, and relatively close up. ;) Not something the casual tourist would discover on his/her own. (Doesn't everyone who visits LA want a good picture of themselves with that sign? :)

Just re-checked the work calendar; that friday is a "quiet" one, shouldn't be difficult to get the day off work. I'll wait until you have a chance to hash this out with you-know-who in 5 weeks before I do anything, though. ;) Let me know if dates/plans change.

time depending on you-know-who, I'd love to spend the day with you. Viewing the Hollywood sign with a local would be the experience of a lifetime!

Unfortunately, upon checking in for your flights in Anchorage you will go through international security (since your flight plan includes international flights) which means they won't let you leave that area of the airports you arrive in until you have finished all of your flights. I got stuck for 7 hours at JFK in NY that way and it SUCKED!

To be honest, I was thinking "car", actually. Especially because of the way people drive around LAX. I was never particularly comfortable riding pillion myself, and now having my own bike - I'm with my friends, I'd do it in emergency but not otherwise. I'm too much of a control freak. ;)

I am really pleased that you two are getting it together. I'd love to go to Alaska one day in my "go to the coldest places on earth quest" I seemingly am on for most of my life.

I remember eons ago sending Erich various "hello"s and other mildly smutty comments on Bigmusclebear (er, I think).. as I would have done to you, I assume... so big warm fuzzies to you both. :-)
