WTF is twitter about? What am I doing right now? I'm sitting here with a laptop on my lap, updating twitter. Duh.

if folks could call my cell phone and get a synthetic voice reading off my status message, like "Watching horrible movie at theater, send text message"

You mean, like updating your voicemail message? ;-)

Yea, but it's under a password and three levels of menus, and you gotta be in a situation where you can speak to do it. Huge PITA - nobody ever changes it.

I wonder if the iPhone's visual voicemail interface lets you swap those messages around quickly.

True. Though the call firewall program I installed on my phone had the option to automatically send a text message to callers when the ringer was turned off- that's if they're calling from a mobile, of course.
